If you know me personally, you know that I love going to concerts. It is something my sisters and I do for fun. This is my first blog post of my concert series where I talk about my experience and give a grade at the end. To give some context, I went to my first concert at 13 years old and I have gone to nine in total since then. I have tickets to 3 more in the near future. (If you are curious I have been to the following: Ed Sheeran (2015), Taylor Swift (2015), Twenty-One Pilots (2016), Logic (2018), Rex Orange County (2018), Clairo (2019), Beabadoobee (2021), Alfie Templeman (2021).) .The most recent one was Tyler's CMIYGL tour. This concert was one of the best I have ever been to for a few reasons, and I am positive that no other set will beat what I experienced on February 10th, 2022.
- Set design. It was unreal how much detail went into the visuals for this concert. The main stage had a big light blue house with stairs and a car that rose up from the bottom of the stage that was used by Tyler to enter. My sister was at a loss for words when we saw it all. There was also a second stage that was far from the main stage and right in front of my section. It had grass decorations that made it look like a safari setting which I assume is an allusion to his song "SAFARI". A walkway was made between the main and second stages where a pink boat was placed. Tyler got on it and rode it to the second stage. I am used to only seeing a big screen in the background with videos of visuals created specifically for each track. This concert took things to the next level in terms of visual. I felt like I was attending a Broadway show with the way the sets were designed.
- Lighting and effects. Tyler did a phenomenal job with having that "wow" factor through giving each track its own unique delivery of visuals. There was fire and waterfalls of sparks all while having a great light show that created a more dramatic performance of his songs. My personal favorite was during "NEW MAGIC WAND". Fire exploded out of the stage and the windows of the house turned a pinkish red while lights flashed on and off to the beat. It made me wish that I had gotten pit tickets so that I could have jumped as wildly as I could. Most, if not all, of the songs had specific lighting colors that corresponded to the album it belonged to. From yellow/orange for Flower Boy to green for Wolf. You can just tell that every tiny detail was thought about.
- Working the Crowd. Tyler freestyled a short tune that included the location of the concert and specific details about it. I am sure he will do this for each location, and it makes it so much more special. It shows that he is present in what he is doing and that he appreciates the fans of the current location. Of course, many artists in general greet the fans onstage by saying the location, but there is something about freestyling that sets the bar higher for how artists can create a more personal atmosphere when the venue is so big.
I spent $85 for my ticket without fees ($127 with fees). For what I saw and how close I was to the second stage, I definitely would have paid way more than that. After the concert, I felt extremely lucky that I was able to get tickets. The quality of everything was out of this world. There was a great mix of songs that created quite a lengthy set which I am grateful to have experienced personally. The cherry on top of all this is that Teezo Touchdown, Vince Staples, Kali Uchis opened the concert, and they each provided amazing performances. Vince looked passionate as he performed and based on his small speech in between songs, he sounded very humble and kind. He thanked each section in the venue by calling out the section numbers as well as individual people in the crowd. Kali blew everyone away with her energy. She had everyone dancing and feeling in awe of being in her presence. If you were not able to attend this tour, I hope, from the bottom of my heart, that you will get a chance to experience a Tyler, The Creator concert in the future.
Score: A+
I really wish he had performed "GONE, GONE / THANK YOU" :') :')
