Meezy<3 on Combat Sports, Graduating High School, and Committing to Music
Meet Meezy<3, an 18 year old artist from Wisconsin filled with drive and no time to waste. Taking full advantage of 2023 with a YouTube channel, TikTok account, and of course, his music, Meezy<3 knows what he wants and how to get his name out there.
Meezy<3 effortlessly weaves in catchy moments within tracks. With fun background vocals singing the word “torture” in the chorus of his newest single, you find yourself staying to hear where the rest of the song will take you. You are, however, left intrigued with a story about angst and its relationship to the uncertainty that comes with navigating being in love.
Waves of emotion in the production mixed with straightforward lyrics fill the tracks as we hear lines like “I’m more than certain that you just want me dead” and “Tell me do you like me, I’ve been dying to know”.
While drinking my matcha, I listened to Meezy<3 tell me about his summer plans, his tips on avoiding burn out, and how much he loves performing. Scroll to read our conversation!
Ale: Hiii thank you so much for taking the time to meet with me virtually. Tell me a little bit about yourself! What’s your name, where are you from, and anything else you’d like to share about yourself!
Meezy<3: My name is Meezy, and I’m eighteen. I’m from Hudson, Wisconsin, which kind of borders Minnesota. I kinda rep Minnesota more often just because I like the Minnesota [music] scene a little more. I’m not in the part of Wisconsin where it’s cool to make music. That’s over in Milwaukee, which is like the other side. I’ve been making music for about four years now — since about 2019 when I was a freshman in high school. I just kept going since then. I originally started making rap, and I wasn’t good. I started making music where anything I recorded I put out on Soundcloud. A hobby I picked up is combat sports in the past five months. I train in Muay Thai about 5-6 days a week, and I plan to fight in August. Besides that — I mean, I train, I lift, go on walks. I’m pretty reserved. I hang out with my girlfriend and friends a lot and just kinda keep to myself. I can make music all day, but I don’t want to just sit all day. I want to entertain as well, and perform. Fighting is another way I can do that besides music.
Ale: So you just graduated high school, how do you feel??
Meezy<3: It feels really good for me. I don’t have any plans to go to college as of right now — like, I’m really done. I don’t have to log in to my student email anymore. It’s been hitting me the past couple of days. I’m really done — like, I don’t have to go into that building ever again in my life. It also hits me again because I turned eighteen about two or three weeks ago. It’s like — okay, I’m eighteen and graduated. It’s pretty nice.
Ale: How do you go about creating your music and what inspires you? Do you do your own production?
Meezy<3: I do my own engineering like mixing and mastering. My stepdad produces, but he does more DJing now. That was a big inspiration growing up. I would always see FL Studio open, and he would always be making beats on his own time. There’s not a lot of festivals that happen in Minnesota or Wisconsin. It’s not LA or Atlanta where most of the big festivals are. I went to a Trippie Redd concert probably in 2017, and seeing his energy live is what influenced me to create music. It made me think about how I want to be on that stage one day. I’ve been to maybe four of his concerts in Minnesota and also Juice Wrld and Ski Mask. That was a great time. I just want to portray and have that energy on stage. I want to perform one day. Having my stepdad being able to show me and [having] access to FL Studios made that next step of creating what I want much easier.
Ale: That’s really cool. Do you have any favorite performances you’ve seen?
Meezy<3: I haven’t been to too many, but I went to Summer Smash last year and that was great. I would say Lil Uzi Vert was crazy to see. Also, Juice WRLD and Ski Mask. They had a joint set in 2019, and that one was so great to see.
Ale: What is your creative process like when creating a new song? Do you have a concept in mind or is it situation-based?
Meezy<3: The process is sort of all over the place. I draw inspiration from living. I don’t directly turn that into a song though. It’s more like an emotion or something that changed my perspective. I look for beats and look at what I got going. I take a lot of voice notes, and I’ll just skim through them when I need to find some inspiration. Most of the time it’s pretty natural where I can just sit down and record.
Ale: Do you have any funny or interesting stories about a time when you were creating a song?
Meezy<3: I have a friend named Jamie who used to make music with me. He has [an] uncle who, during our sophomore year, was like, “I got a studio you can come record at and it’s super nice.” We meet him at a Wal-Mart parking lot in a neighboring town, and we get picked up in his van. We didn’t go to the studio right away. He had to go to the DMV or something, and we were there for like two hours. It was hot, and he had his two kids in the back. This little kid in the back was five or something and he was just hitting us and calling us names. He had this perfume bottle that he was spraying us with. He even sprayed himself in the face. It was just not the best time. When we got to the studio, it wasn’t an actual studio. You have to go down to the basement underneath the stairs in this little dark closet. There was no light, and the mic was hanging. It goes out to a macbook that was outside in the basement. There was one speaker, the keyboard doesn’t work, the mouse doesn’t work. We didn’t even record anything. We tried to though.
Ale: You posted a youtube video titled “NEVER burn out again”. As an artist, what is your main piece of advice when it comes to such situations?
Meezy<3: When I had dropped back to back songs, I was thinking about how I gotta plan for the next song and how it has to be bigger and better. I think that happens with a lot of artists that everyone wants everything to be perfect and get to the next level with every release. I was so much in my head that I didn’t make anything. I sat off it for a few months, and I just started creating. At times, I didn't have the motivation but I tried to make something anyway. Even if I thought I couldn’t because I didn’t have things in order, I still tried because you can get inspiration later. Another tip I have is to live life more. A lot of artists only make music and put so much into music that they burn themselves out. You should find it fun, but there are days where you have to push through it in terms of discipline. The next video I am making is actually about how to make goals.
Ale: I was informed that you used to have a cool playlist filled with underground artists. Tell me a bit about that and how it has played a role in your journey as an artist.
Meezy<3: As of right now the playlist is done, but it was called “The New Underground”. I had a first version but then my spotify got banned so I made a new version and it kinda ended there. It came about because I was listening to a lot of underground artists which is what I listen to mainly. Either my homies or people in the underground space. If I make a playlist and I get it big, I was hoping that other artists will get more numbers and I’ll get more numbers. It helped me understand how to market, because I was dropping daily TikToks like you can’t really grow a playlist without the marketing. You really have to build it from the ground up. I was just trying to bring value to people and build a community for myself.
Ale: If you weren’t making music, would you see yourself working behind the scenes?
Meezy<3: I definitely see myself working behind the scenes in music in the future whether it’s managing an artist or organizing an event. I’ve been trying to plan my own show for the past year or so. It fell through the first time, but I still wanna set that up at some point.
Ale: I saw you have a YouTube video about how you created a music video. Can you tell me a bit about what it’s like behind the scenes?
Meezy<3: I prepare for my music videos, but we usually go off script and do whatever. I remember for the “NO CHANCE” music video, I was driving by this tunnel and was like we gotta come here to film. We definitely did a lot of planning for the “fool for you” music video. My friend Broden is my cameraman and edits the videos. He’s a big help with the inspiration of what to create. He’s always my go-to. He’s been to all my performances and filmed them.
Ale: I saw you do some live performances, what are those like? Do you ever get nervous? Is there any preparation there?
Meezy<3: I make my setlists on Soundcloud like I throw the songs into a playlist and I organize them. I also just perform in my bedroom or go outside with a speaker or whatever. One thing I am glad about is that I don’t get nervous and that’s kinda why I started doing this. I have always envisioned myself on a stage in front of a huge crowd. I’m fine performing in front of 10 people and I’m fine performing in front of 300 people which is what I did at my high school prom last year. It was great. I’ve had three performances so far. One was at a local event in Wisconsin and another was with an artist I was on tour with. I feel like I’m supposed to be on stage. I’m just the most comfortable there.
Ale: Now that it’s summer, do you have any plans? They can be non-music related!
Meezy<3: My main goals right now are music and fighting. I’m really trying to fight by August. I think I have eight to ten weeks left so I need to keep training. Also YouTube. I want to turn that platform into something I can monetize.
Ale: Now for some short get-to-know me questions, what is your favorite season of the year?
Meezy<3: Where I live, we get all four seasons. I would have to say summer or fall. Fall is the perfect season for wearing jeans and hoodies. I thrive in the sun though. I can be out there all day.
Ale: Go-to snack(s) when watching a movie?
Meezy<3: At the movie theater, it’s popcorn and a cherry coke. Unless I’m bringing my own food. I’ve brought a Chipotle burrito on several occasions. At home, I would probably just make dinner. I like cooking a lot, so I’ll make a steak and watch a movie.
Ale: If you could headline any festival, which one would you pick?
Meezy<3: I’d probably headline Summer Smash. I’ve watched Cole Bennett and the Lyrical Lemonade channel grow for a long time. It would be great to be a part of that community. It’s the closest one to me in Chicago.
Ale: Favorite album(s) of all time?
Meezy<3: To Pimp a Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar and I think also ? by XXXTENTACION.
Ale: Dream collaboration?
Meezy<3: Jean Dawson.
